My Guest ~ L.M. Brown

Destiny & Dragons

Darker Themes
Hi everyone.  Thank you, NJ, for letting me visit here today to talk about my newest novella, Destiny & Dragons.

My fairy tale series are light and humorous and quick little reads to pass the afternoon. But as some readers have already figured out, there are also more serious themes in the tales.

In Let Down Your Hair it was about acceptance of yourself and your partner, without trying to change them.  It was about living your life the way you want to, without fear of what others think of you.

For Potions & Prisons I delved into sacrifice, and what you would give up to be with the one you love – which seems to be a theme for more than one of my books.

Destiny & Dragons is my third fairy story and it also touches on the theme of sacrifice, but it is not the only topic I raise.

Abandonment by your family is a popular theme in MM romances. Too many teens come out to their families only to be disowned or kicked out of their homes.  In a contemporary setting this can work very well.  In a fairy tale setting, not so much.  So I went with a different type of abandonment, more fitting for this particular kingdom.

Runt, the sweet young dragon, has suffered the worst kind of abandonment and has lost hope entirely, when he is found by Marcus.  Left behind by his family, held prisoner, tortured, and abused, he has a lot of issues to work through if he is going to get a happy ending.

I hope you enjoy my fairy tales, whether for the simple humour or the more serious topics I raise in them.

When Lord Marcus set out on his quest, it seemed a simple enough task to accomplish. Slay the dragon and rescue the princess, securing his father's approval and earning his happily ever after—only the princess is a witch and the dragon is nowhere to be seen. Instead he finds a young man who has a very big secret and is in far greater need of rescuing. Marcus's well planned quest might have taken an unexpected turn, but his happy ending could still be within his grasp, if he can earn the trust of a dragon who has been betrayed and hurt by everyone he has ever known.

Excerpt
Once the servants had departed, Marcus went to fetch Runt from the bedroom so he could take a bath. As Runt stripped out of his borrowed clothes, Marcus tried not to stare at his body. When he caught Robert's knowing glance, he scowled and set about scrubbing at Runt's hair with a little more force than was necessary. When Runt cringed at his ministrations, he mumbled apologies and made an effort to take more care. He tried to keep his touches business-like, but he didn't fool anyone and certainly not himself. As he washed away the layers of dirt, bruises upon bruises were revealed, along with more scars than Marcus had ever seen on another living being. Marcus's heart ached when he saw the abuse the poor dragon had suffered.

He was vaguely aware of Robert and Aiden leaving the chambers, but he couldn't take his eyes off Runt. A thin scar, several years old, stretched down the length of his arm. Marcus traced the raised flesh with his finger.

"One of the princes did that," Runt whispered. "I was lucky. If I hadn't moved just in time, he would have pierced my heart. Sometimes I used to wonder whether I might be better off if one of them had."

"No!" Marcus took Runt into his arms, cautious not to hold him too tightly. "Never say that. You're safe now."

"I'd given up," Runt cried. "When you came to the castle, I'd given up hope of ever being free again. I longed for the pain to end. I just wanted everything to be over."

Marcus carried Runt to the rug in front of the fire. He held the dragon while he sobbed and Marcus murmured nonsense words into his ear. He vowed the witch would be dead before the end of the year. No one else would suffer at her hands.

Updates ~ Well, Kind Of...

Okay, I know everyone is wondering if I'm up to date on everything I have set out to do this year... well the answer is 'NO'. But, I'll have caught up by the end of Feb... I have kept up to date mostly in longhand... I just haven't typed it all up on the computer.

The Lines Of Marsden 4: The Trail Of Red Roses... I am on track, and even wording it so the short offshoot Christmas novella at the end of the year... I feel good about this storyline.

Moon Runners 2: I Won't Let You Go... I have just over half of this written, but need to go back through and rewrite a whole section as it doesn't make sense, and I have no idea what it has to do with the story itself... I hate it when that happens.

Lancaster's Way 3: Pre-loved...This is up to date and all written in longhand. I have no excuse except to say that I have been suffering a bout of bronchitis and hadn't been on the computer for five days... so the ones in long hand will continue to be written in longhand until I find the time to type everything up.

The Connelly Chronicles 2: Beautiful Goodbyes... This story has been one drama after another. I just can't get it right. I keep getting close to finishing, then pulling it apart and redoing it all over again ~ frustrating as hell I can tell you.

Still waiting to hear back on Intended Mates 1: Lay Your Body Down... and Wardens Of The Guild 1: The Real You...

All Cock & No Bull Blog Hop

Okay, I'm participating in this hop, and honestly I have no clue what I'm doing. So I hope you will all forgive me... In saying that here is what's happening Michael Marsden decided it would be best if I interviewed him...Seeing as he is the king and all. So I thought I would just do it to appease him. I borrowed these questions from someone else's blog when I promo'd over there. I hope you enjoy.

Interview with Michael Marsden
(The Lines of Marsden)

What do you hope reader's take away from this retelling of your story?
I hope people will come to learn that even though we are all different races and species. Underneath we are basically all the same. We all have our own insecurities that we have to deal with.

What is one thing your storyteller got right?
My author got right just how beautiful and special my Sweetness is. I think people all over the world could benefit from having their own Sweetness in their lives.

What is one thing your storyteller misrepresented?
Actually, she got wrong just how brave I am… I can tell you now—I’m just not that cool calm and collected.

If you could have changed one of your actions—just one—what would it be, and why?
I think we are the way we are for a reason… but if I could take back one thing it would be opening my damn mouth and proclaiming myself as king of the vampire legions—what the hell was I thinking?

Who would you want to play you in a movie-retelling of your story? Who would play your love interest?
Benj… only joking. Don’t tell him I said that. Gypsy and Babe would tell you Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Apparently we have the same lips—go figure.

What is a quote you live by?
Fool me once—shame on you. Fool me twice—shame on me. Fool me a third time—I’ll hunt you down and exact revenge.

Excluding your own, what is your favorite book?
Mainstream: anything by David Eddings.
LGBTQ: anything by Charlie Richards.

What would you have named your story?
What The Fuck… I find myself saying that more and more these days.

What event in your life would make a wonderful short-story addition to your story?
Probably all the crap I got up to between Babe being taken into his mind by Sebastian and Blake showing me how to get him back… It wasn’t a good time for me, and it won’t show me in a good light, but it would be interesting none the less. It would also show why I do some of the things I do.

Was there anything your storyteller left out that you’d like your fans to know?
Actually she pretty much got us spot on. Sweetness said we needed to be open and honest, or as Gypsy said we just had to let it all hang out for the world to see.

Were you reluctant to have your story told?
Honestly, I didn’t think I was that interesting. Hell, in my human years I had to have my sister be my bodyguard. Nowadays I’m quite willing to defend myself and everyone else I consider family.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
I wish I could be stronger… instead of always second guessing myself.

Did your storyteller take any artistic liberties? If so, please set the story straight.
Yeah there is something that needs to be set straight, NJ didn’t make Gypsy anywhere as bossy as she is in real life—don’t tell Gyps I said that or she’ll kick my arse—again.

In what setting would you have preferred your story to have taken place?
Maybe on another planet, because seriously, this kind of shit doesn’t really happen on Earth, right?

Your storyteller told some pretty embarrassing tales about you. Is there any secrets you’d like to share about them?
No, because NJ still hasn’t finished writing my story… come back and ask me that question again after book 6 is written and released.

Your story is being made into a musical. What's the name of your song?
The River by Good Charlotte.

Pick a scene in your story. What song is playing in the background?
The scene where I see Doyle again for the first time in book 3: You Make Me Die In Pieces. So right now it would be a Nickelback songNever Going To Be Alone… this is what I was feeling when Sweetness couldn’t remember me and we always ended up fighting.

What is your favorite chapter of your story?
I don’t have one… an event I’ most grateful for is when Maffa bit Gypsy and converted her into a werewolf… It was when I realized she would be able to stay with me forever… Mind you, Babe was willing to convert her into a vampire if necessary.

If price was no consequence, what gift would you buy your love interest?
I would buy Sweetness the world.

What first attracted you to your love interest?
I don’t know… at first I didn’t see it all. I think it mainly snuck up like a gradual thing… then Gypsy told me to open up my eyes and see what was before me—that just happened to be Sweetness. Sometimes Gypsy’s bossiness is a good thing.

What surprises you most about your love interest?
I think Sweetness is the strongest person I know. Nothing ever phases him.

At what moment did you know you were in love?
As everyone will tell you—I’m pretty clueless about things like that. Like I said earlier—I had to be told.

If you could watch your love interest's childhood as a film, would you?
Yes, I would want to know everything about him in every incarnation of his life—as we found out recently we have lived and died through a few.

What is one moment in your love interest's life—before you met—you wish you could have experienced?
That’s a hard one… I don’t know really. Maybe I would like to see if he was as cute as a child as he was as a man. Maybe how he interacted with his family. Like I said I would like to know everything.

Put three items in a time capsule you will open in 25 years. What are your items?

1. A pictures of my whole family—both past and present.
2. Christian’s Grandfather’s ring. Maybe then it would keep Babe’s power out of the hands of others.
3. A list of all our names and job descriptions for all future generations. Just in case that stupid bitch, Venetia gets a lucky shot in, and we have to start our life cycles all over again.
